Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

As a biology major minoring in education, this job really showed me that I could enjoy working with kids while making sure that everyone left camp knowing more about animals and our planet. I learned a lot about different types of kids and my experience working with such a variety of kids will absolutely help out in the future.

What I wish was different

For some kids, it was pretty apparent that they didn't want to be there in the first place. It was more challenging to keep these kids involved and entertained, but good practice for the future. Extra one on one time with them can really help.

Advice

You really get to put yourself out there as someone with authority, and it can be easy to become too strict, or on the opposite side, too laid back. Finding a healthy balance will make sure that you still command respect from the kids, while continuing to be a fun leader that makes the kids want to come back to camp next year.
