Application Security Intern

June - August 2018 • Lafayette, CO

What I liked

The people are amazing and super supportive! They really value their interns and give them real-world experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I could work at headquarters with other interns instead of just in the secure area.

Advice

Definitely network with everyone you can in the company. Regardless of position, everybody is there to support your growth. Feel free to venture out and try projects in different departments and the intern BIRST project is an absolute must!!

Integrated Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2018 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

The people I worked with were great, and I had many collaborative projects that involved teamwork. I was fortunate to work in all three of Ball's supply chain departments and I learned so much about being a professional.

What I wish was different

I wish Ball was located in Arizona, I wanted to take their job offer but I had to decline due to my location preferences.

Advice

Be open to anything and speak up as much as possible. I was there to learn, and asking questions was the best way for me to understand my role as an intern.

Strategic intelligence intern

June - August 2018 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

Ball Aersoapce has a wonderful culture. The people are extremely kind and dedicated to their work. The intern program has a lot of interesting events that helped me with understanding the kind of career I wanted.

What I wish was different

The offices were very out of date. They were stuck in the 80s, but that’s my only complaint. Work environment does affect employee satisfaction, but it’s minor. I’m very glad I worked at Ball, because I learned a lot about myself as a professional, what I want in a company, and what kind of career i would like to have.

Advice

Always be open to new things. I thought what I was doing at ball aerospace was exactly the career path I wanted. The industry was very interesting and forward moving, but I learned both weren’t for me. Now I’m ready for an internship in construction and building automation controls in 2019 with McKinstry.

quality assurance intern

June - August 2018 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

The very welcoming and friendly atmosphere, the BIRST intern rocket payload program, and the generous pay. I also used the internship for elective credit, which eased my course load this semester.

What I wish was different

Had some issues with the for-credit aspect, difficulty communicating with the professor and receiving/returning assignments. There was also the issue of everything I needed to turn in for the course had to be released by the company before.

Advice

If you want to take an internship for credit, get started on the process early and communicate with your assigned professor regularly. Also, network and volunteer as much as possible.

Test Operations Intern

June - August 2018 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

Was able to work on projects that had direct impact on Ball's products/projects. The team treated me like an employee from day one, wasn't made to feel "less than" simply because I was an intern. Everyone was incredibly open to teaching me about the job, about aerospace in general, and about job search advice for later on. BIRST was also an awesome experience that helped me hone new skills and meet other interns outside of my department.

What I wish was different

I was the only intern in my lab, which at times made it difficult to meet other interns and interact with them. Other departments had multiple interns who all worked somewhat closely, so I think that would have been helpful if I had seen more interns on a day-to-day basis.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions or look for help. Everyone is eager to share their knowledge and help you out, and while you may feel like you are bugging them or distracting from work, more times than not they are happy to help. They know you won't know everything, its ok!

Technical intern

June 2018 • Westminster, CO

What I liked

High levels of responsibility not usually given to an engineer Fascinating scientific instrumentation Inclusive and collaborative culture Opportunity to meet and engage with leadership

What I wish was different

More exposure to business operations/projects More chemical engineering work rather than general engineering

Advice

Ask for feedback!! Take initiative! Get there early Find ways to acquire more responsibilty Follow through and be prompt Don’t apologize, find ways to rephrase an apology into an expression of gratitude (say thanks for your patience rather than sorry for being late) Get to know all coworkers and technicians we’ll enough to have small talk and break awkward silences
