Museum of Science Boston

Curriculum Marketing Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Working for the Museum of Science has been one of the best experiences of my life and definitely improved my skills. Despite having to be totally remote I learned how public speaking is different through a camera, how to communicate in a detailed and understandable way, and how to make connections. I also got to experience real-world critiques where I had to revise and present my work many times before getting the approval to go ahead. Everyone was super accommodating and kind and really made the best of the situation of being remote.

What I wish was different

I had hoped to develop more connections in a face-to-face environment just by working in an office with my coworkers, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 I had to work from home. I also would have liked to have learned more about the Museum in general, which working from home limited my access to the Museum.

Advice

I would recommend to any student considering this internship that they should be prepared to collaborate and communicate consistently, be prepared to work in an office or remotely as needed, and to be versatile and willing to jump between different types of projects.

Animal Care Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved the hands on aspect of handling and caring for the animals.

What I wish was different

I wish they had told us up front that they don't do recommendation letters.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is that there are a lot of cleaning tasks, so be ready for that.

Early Childhood Interpretation Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment at the museum and the team approach the discovery center had. I got a lot of good experience working with children and with families.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been more psychology based towards my major. Unfortunately due to the busy summer schedule I was not able to participate in all the psychology based talks with the living lab researchers. In the discover center at the museum they bring in researchers from local universities to run experiments in the center.

Advice

Although having an unpaid internship in Boston can be tough, I still think having the experience was more important than getting paid. And while it was sometimes discouraging doing a lot of work for nothing, looking back on it, I think this experience has helped me find what I want to do for my future career and will be a good addition to my resume.
