Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

The subject I was researching was very interesting and so it didn’t feel much like work as it was just gaining experience in the field. The hours were also very flexible and could work with my schedule. The professor I was helping out with research was also super nice to work for.

What I wish was different

It was the first year of the research, so the methods were still being tinkered with, and sometimes some of the measurements seemed redundant or unnecessary.

Advice

If you’re in a major that does lab or field research, don’t be afraid to build new contacts with professors and work in their labs because it can definitely help in the future.

Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU)

June - August 2019 • Hickory Corners, MI

What I liked

What I liked most was the ability to work independently and outside of a classroom setting. Living on a biological station was also great because you got to be around other undergraduate researchers, grad students, post docs, and lab techs involved in various ecological fields. Being paid, reimbursed for travel, housed and fed while gaining research experience made this a great summer experience

What I wish was different

If you don't like living on a remote biological station, this may not be for you. You do get to live on a beautiful lake though.

Advice

All REU positions are very competitive. I recommend applying to as many as you can early on.

Student Research Assistant

May 2018 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

The part I that set this experience apart from everything else I have done is working with professors and other PhD students. Doing this has opened my eyes to being passionate about researching and possibly changing my career focus overall.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spend more time outside of the lab reading more about what I was doing and expanding myself more than I did.

Advice

Do not be afraid to contact researchers. Most of them want to show you what they are working one and love when people are interested in what they are doing and want to be able to show others what they know and have learned.
