Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU)

June - August 2019 • Hickory Corners, MI

What I liked

What I liked most was the ability to work independently and outside of a classroom setting. Living on a biological station was also great because you got to be around other undergraduate researchers, grad students, post docs, and lab techs involved in various ecological fields. Being paid, reimbursed for travel, housed and fed while gaining research experience made this a great summer experience

What I wish was different

If you don't like living on a remote biological station, this may not be for you. You do get to live on a beautiful lake though.

Advice

All REU positions are very competitive. I recommend applying to as many as you can early on.

What I liked

I enjoyed the program's holistic approach to graduate-level research. In the span of ten weeks I bolstered my public speaking skills, learned about regression analysis, and conducted a research experiment.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known about the program sooner!

Advice

Take advantage of the resources at your campus. At the Career Center, their networking outings and professional-building workshops have helped prepare me for research and professional positions.

Biology Research Intern

What I liked

Being a computer science leaning student, having the opportunity to apply what I knew to a real-life scenario was really useful and interesting.

What I wish was different

I was recommended to this job through a family friend, which was nice, but also found myself removed from what was going on.

Advice

When looking for a job or summer experience, first meet with whoever's in charge to figure out details concerning salary, hours, etc.

Development Intern

May - August 2019 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

I loved having the opportunity to expand my network and learn key skills about Philanthropy through the college of Communication Arts and Sciences endowment database. One of my favorite seminars included learning about the International Advancement department at MSU and how they manage building connections and holding events around the world with international alumni from the University.

What I wish was different

At times I was unclear on where I should be with my work or exactly what was expected of me, however it was very easy to communicate with my supervisors any time there was confusion. I don't have anything major that I would change, it was a very organized and well-structured internship and I loved the team of people that I got to work with.

Advice

One thing that I would want others to know about this internship experience would be to make sure that you are able to manage your time wisely and stay organized. Working a really long week was overwhelming at times, but good communication was key as well as keeping a positive attitude and giving yourself small breaks and rewards when necessary.

Research Intern

May - July 2019 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

Awesome REU experience learning how PHD life is like and learning about different programs MSU has for research and graduate programs.

What I wish was different

Wasn't prepared for the 40+ hours working a week in the lab but it was still an awesome experience.

Advice

There are a ton of opportunities like the REU I did to get experience in the field you desire and you can honestly go across the country or even to other countries. Some don't require any previous experience either and afterwards all you've learned during the summer is a huge resume booster.
