Broadening Assignment

October - November 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I had a tremendous amount of autonomy. I was given very broad projects and given the freedom to figure out how to solve them myself.

What I wish was different

The autonomy was a bit of a double edged sword. I liked it, but I wish I had been able to touch base with my manager just a touch more.

Advice

My one thing I wish was different about the internship, I could have fixed myself. I wish that I had taken more initiative to reach out to my manager and get his input on my projects. He seemed satisfied with what I gave him in the end, but I probably could have done better by just reaching out to him more. On another note, MACU is a great company to work for. If you can get hired, even in their call center, they have a lot of opportunities for movement into lots of different departments. In my case, I was able to make a lateral movement into a completely different department to meet the internship requirements for my major.

Bank Teller

January - July 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I liked not only being able to help those in the community learn about finances but also that I was able to learn a lot my self.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gone for an MEO position which is both a loan officer and teller, just because I would have been a better asset to the company.

Advice

The company was great however other people who worked within it made it difficult at times to want to go to work. Make sure that you not only research what the company is but try to meet those you work with there in the job interview well.

What I liked

My experience working for Mountain America Credit Union has been a guiding and significant space for me to find my desired major and field of study. It has been an amazing experience, and I am grateful for the things that I have learned working here!

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish that had been different had little to do with my actual experience with those at Mountain America, but rather the way I reacted to becoming a part of the Mountain America team. I wish that I had been more open to establishing friendships with the other team members.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to the members that come in about everything you have to offer them. There is a lot that you can do to help others, no matter the situation in which you are placed. Also, don't be afraid to establish relationships with your teammates at Mountain America, as they can be some of your biggest supporters and backbone as you strive to excel in the workplace.

Business Analyst Intern

April - July 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience as a whole. I worked with Excel and BI and was able to apply a lot of the things that I am leaning toward my degree. It was a great opportunity to showcase my skills and hopefully will lead me to a similar career after graduation.

What I wish was different

The one thing I would change is better communication. I was able to work remotely from the company's corporate office in Utah and stay in Rexburg. But, being remote I was on my own and often was not able to get ahold of my team or manager for days at a time. I would hope that communication has since been improved.

Advice

My classes on campus made this experience what it was. I was the first of this internship program for the company, but what I learned in my classes was expressed in my internship work. Every lesson in every class matters!

What I liked

I love the work environment and how thorough the training was at this organization. I feel confident in my knowledge and skills as a result of the strong support system around me and the extensive amount of knowledge I gained through training.

What I wish was different

I think that considering the type of job it is, everything is pretty perfect. Something I might change would possible be a more professional presence from managers in terms of attire (some can look a little too casual and I don't really think casual appearance garners respect or superiority in a manager position). But I really do think it's so great there.

Advice

I would advise people to stick it out in the beginning. The work was hard to get used to and was quite draining in the beginning, so many people ended up quitting. But after my first couple months I eventually got the hang of it and the work is no longer a struggle for me at all.
