Private Wealth Management Intern

July 2018 - June 2019 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed being on a high caliber team that gave me inspiration for my fullest potential when I graduated. As a student, I'm constantly consumed by textbook work and theories and examples. In the internship, it was refreshing and exciting to be in a setting where everything was real and where people's livelihoods were essentially on the line. I appreciated the trust and flexibility that the team placed on me in terms of giving me opportunities to do things outside of the 'intern norm' and allowing me to have an experience like I was a full-time analyst.

What I wish was different

I wish there were not so many regulations as it hindered me from being able to do everything that a full-time analyst does. Despite this, I feel that my team did a great job of opening different doors for me on the job so that I was able to have the most authentic experience as possible as well as helping the business in a tangible way.

Advice

My advice is that if you want an internship at a top bank, you need to network aggressively. It doesn't matter if you don't have anyone that you know who works at one or knows someone who works at one. Start off by networking on LinkedIn with USF alum who may work there or are in the industry that you are interested in getting in an internship in. Ask for coffee or an informational phone call and impress them -- and before you know it, you'll find yourself in front of an opportunity.

I loved learning about the many facets of the stock market. I learned things from all aspects of the field, such as statistics that correlate with strong companies, how Morgan Stanley is able to make money off of investments, and how to network/build relationships with clients

What I wish was different

I wish I had the ability to access some of the stock research tools that I could only access at work.

Advice

I would highly recommend taking an internship in a wealth management field, even if it isn't in your major just because of the invaluable knowledge you gain in regards to investing. This internship was highly informative and engaging.

Summer Branch Analyst

June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I loved the flexibility of this program. It was a rotational internship where each week I shadowed a different position within the branch of Morgan Stanley. I was a part of a 10 person class where we started the internship by going to NYC for an orientation and met all of the other interns in my cohort. Then we all spread out to our individual branches and were able to compare our experiences with one another. I also studied for my SIE exam certification and passed at the end of the summer. I was also given the opportunity to present to branch management on new trends in the industry!

What I wish was different

I was the only intern in my branch, so it was a little difficult to collaborate, but I was able to speak with the other interns at other branches.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out and speak to everyone in the office! Once you introduce yourself, managers and coworkers are much more likely to give you career advice, help you through any challenging projects you might have, or give you additional work!
