Monmouth Medical Center- RWJ Barnabas Health

Patient Care Associate

June 2020 • Long Branch, NJ

What I liked

I learned a lot at this job! I now have new skills such as drawing blood, blood glucose checks, and what to do during a rapid response. I enjoyed the people I worked with as well as the patients. I believe this is a great stepping stone into the nursing field!

What I wish was different

Since I am only per diem, I only worked about once per week, so I wish I could have worked more.

Advice

Ask questions! Do not be afraid to ask about anything you are unsure about.

Patient Care Associate

June 2019 • Long Branch, NJ

What I liked

The RWJ Barnabas Health employees are very friendly and approachable.

What I wish was different

I loved my role as a PCA, but I wish I could have had more “student nurse” experience.

Advice

If you’re not interested in helping patients and getting dirty doing it, this is not a good fit for you.

June - August 2019 • Long Branch, NJ

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere and the people I worked with. I liked being able to see both the business/administrative side of a hospital as well as the patient care side

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work more than 25 hours a week.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to people, especially when you need help! There will always be someone who will help you if you ask!

Intensive Care Unit Nurse Extern

May 2018 • Long Branch, NJ

What I liked

It was an excellent hands on experience for a student nurse. I had my own independence job as a PCA and the job as a Nurse Extern. The knowledge and skills I gained through this summer was crucial to my career as a nurse.

What I wish was different

I experienced so much in the ICU that I wouldn’t change anything about the job.

Advice

Be prepared to never stop moving and have 5 or sometimes 6 nurses completely relying on you for updates of patients status, help with care, or participate in codes. You must be able to think fast on your feet and very, very organized.
