What I liked

The company has an amazing culture where as an intern, I was able to learn a multitude of information in only three months of being there. All the employees are very passionate about their work and love to share their knowledge with you if you ever get stuck or simply want to learn more.

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company culture. Everyone was really welcoming and willing to help show me the ropes, as well as collaborate with me as a whole. Additionally, the mentorship was top-notch and I definitely feel like my skills not just in programming, but also in managing my time and collaborating with others has improved.

What I wish was different

I think the only thing that could be improved about the internship would be to shorten some of the training protocols, as we ended up taking three days out of the office on a training/on-boarding session that I believe could have been shorter.

Advice

Really work with your mentor and communicate well! Communicate about your project, as well as what your future career goals are, and they will do their best to help you!

Digital Marketing Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

There were two main aspects of this internship that I really liked. First, I benefitted from the real-world experience and from doing hands-on work. My work and research played a role in the decisions my department would make, and I enjoyed having responsibility. For example, during MongoDB's largest annual conference MongoDB World, I was responsible for backend work on the mobile app. I sent out all the push notifications on the app to guide people to different workshops and sessions. Concurrently, I was managing the social media platforms and directly responding to consumers and attendees. These experiences exposed me to not just a fast-paced environment, but also to numerous online tools to facilitate my work. Secondly, I enjoyed that I was part of a formal internship program. MongoDB accepted 62 interns this summer, and during lunch breaks or after hours, I could hang out with my fellow interns and make new friends. This summer, the program managers organized many events: a Mets game, dinner, an arcade, a pizza tour, and even a broadway show. This internship was one of the best experiences I have ever had.

What I wish was different

Because my internship was only 10 weeks, the first six weeks focused on MongoDB World, so it did not leave me enough time to complete my other project, which was working on the campaign ads. I wish my internship had been a little longer so I could have finished it.

Advice

If you work at a company like MongoDB, you should be prepared to work very hard and sometimes work a little longer. There were days when I had to stay back to finish my work, and that's totally normal. Also, it is very important to stay in contact with your mentor/who you are working with. They love to see your passion and enthusiasm by asking questions and being curious. My mentor was very helpful and offered me great advice, and it would have been harder to finish my assignments without his guidance.
