Industrial Engineering Co-Op
January - August 2018 • Racine, WI
What I liked
The employees at Modine were friendly--almost everyone greets each other in the hallway.
What I wish was different
My role did not include any collaboration with fellow co-ops. I would have liked to have more interaction with other departments to gain a basic understanding of other job roles.
Advice
Get involved in some of the activities offered--it's a great way to connect with other employees that you don't interact with on a daily basis. My two favorite activities were the running club and corporate cup.

Manufacturing/Process Engineering Co-op
January 2018 - April 2020 • Racine, WI
What I liked
The boss I had here was a fantastic mentor. My project was very research-based and required me to find the right people to teach me what I needed to know. My boss always knew how to put me in touch with the right people or find someone who did. He allowed me the flexibility to work independently but keep him informed on the new information that I was learning and he pushed me by asking great questions.
What I wish was different
The company as a whole is behind on its innovation and technological superiority. As a young adult, the eye-catching characteristics of a company can be how up to date a company is and the resources that you have access to. Having some of the oldest workstations and using cheaper programs just makes the company feel like it doesn't want to be apart of "the now". I also think that heat exchangers are not that exciting of a product so as a result, the work is less exciting. In my experience, there was also a lack of good communication from higher up than me which led to money issues when I tried finishing my project.
Advice
It's a solid internship for someone in school and looking to find a unique product area. There is not a ton of innovation in the company and it's not a high-tech environment, but this can teach you a good lesson to work with what you have. There are some opportunities to travel (if it's in the states it'll probably be by car).
