Modesto City Schools

Student Teacher

August - December 2020 • Modesto, CA

What I liked

The school district is very welcoming. I learned quite a bit while distance teaching. The district has many opportunities to train for the new technology and platforms in use.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time and partial pay to work with the district and my students.

Advice

I would look into substitute permits a lot sooner.

What I liked

I love that every day I am making a difference in the lives our of societies most vulnerable citizens. I loved that I was able to build connections with students and help them grow and learn along side them.

What I wish was different

I work with students three to five years old in the autism program for MCS and one thing I wish was different is that our students have lots of structured time, they often aren't given many chances to free play and learn like their typically developing peers.

Advice

Working with children with special needs is not easy, it is not for the faint of heart. There will be days when you are exhausted and drained, but it is all worth it to hear a nonverbal child say their first work, to see a children come out their shell, those "ah-haha" moments make it worth it.
