Summer Research Intern

May - August 2023 • Lexington, MA

What I liked

Working at the Lab was a one-of-a-kind experience. Everyone there wants to see you succeed, whether they're your supervisors, group staff, group leader, or even staff members from different divisions—they love their interns. The Lab offers countless opportunities for you to learn what different research groups are working on and how that work is impacting the country.

What I wish was different

There's nothing I would change about my experience, even if I could.

Advice

While you're at the Lab, make sure to use all available resources. Speak with your mentor, get in contact with staff members from various groups that pique your interest, and even just take time to tour the entire campus. Everyone there is eager to help you learn as much as possible.

Optical Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Lexington, MA

What I liked

This was a great experience! I was given a project of my own with some guidance, but I really liked the freedom. It was my responsibility to make sure the project was done right, and it really tested my knowledge and abilities.

What I wish was different

It was difficult without assistance for housing (i.e., a housing stipend). They offered 'subsidized' housing at Northeastern, but that was a 45min-2hr bus ride away depending on traffic. Housing in Lexington would be great.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask the senior staff for help! They want to talk with you and share their knowledge. It's natural to be intimidated, but they're a very valuable resource.

Deep Learning Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Lexington, MA

What I liked

I loved having access to cutting edge hardware to conduct machine learning with.

What I wish was different

I flew into Boston the day after my last final and began working the following day and didn't stop until mid-August. I wish I had given myself a break.

Advice

If you're a computer science major, come to Oberlin Computer Science Majors Comittee's career and interview preparation sessions; they definitely helped me acquire this experience. Declare your major and request to be added to the mailing list for more information.
