Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2020 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

The wide variety of access to different machines and procedures in labs I never knew existed at S&T. While not directly applicable to my major, additive manufacturing is for sure an interesting and futuristic field worth learning about.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately there is little to no onboarding process for my research group, which made things difficult in the beginning. That being said, we're currently working on making it easier for everyone to understand what each other are working on and the details behind our projects.

Advice

Any student going into a research position should be aware that it takes time and moves very slowly most of the time. Be patient and proactive in spending your time wisely, and asks lots and lots of questions.

Undergraduate Research Fellow

May 2020 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

The open-endedness of my project and the freedom to tackle the problem(s) in whichever way I felt appropriate and effective.

What I wish was different

I wish that the coronavirus would have made meetings and more of the work in person.

Advice

Research has taught me more and allowed me to apply theory and knowledge gained from courses much more than an industry job could.

hands on experience, furthered my research. Got to job shadow at several different federal departments.

What I wish was different

more structure. Program felt a little thrown together. Too much down time.

Advice

it was a fantastic experience but have a research project and lots of data before you go. My research was still in the beginning phase and there are allot of resources I could have used if I had more data.

Civil Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2019 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

Get to have hands on aspect with concrete testing, specifically fresh property tests. Also, being able to work with more specialized concretes like ecobridge, SCC, and SWC concrete. Really opened my eyes to how sensitive some of these batch mixes can be.

What I wish was different

The only problem that I had was that the Graduate students would often leave all the manual or setup work to us, the undergrads, and would only be there when they needed to be. The boss was constantly trying to battle this situation, but it was still quite often a struggle.

Advice

Learn how to be direct with graduate students so that they understand they are supposed to be in the lab helping you, not so much letting you do all the setup work without them there.

Undergraduate Researcher

April 2019 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

I performed research under a professor from a course I took Spring '19. I enjoyed the one-on-one atmosphere. He was able to teach me more about real world applications outside of using a text book. I also was able to learn a new CAD software that would be beneficial for my career.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more communication of tasks I would be completing from the beginning, but I learned as the research continued.

Advice

This research opened many doors, but the first step was connecting with a professor that has an similar interest as you. This allows for more communication about topics and expands research areas.
