Mississippi State University

Fisheries intern

May - August 2020 • Biloxi, MS

What I liked

I liked the team I worked with. They were all really nice, easy to work with, and taught me a lot

What I wish was different

Obviously COVID-19 messed with my internship so I wish I could have had the full experience and attended in-person.

Advice

Always apply for internships even if you doubt yourself. Getting the experience is great but getting to know more people within your field is the best part. It gives you connections, advice, friendships, and more.

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2018 • Starkville, MS

What I liked

I liked gaining the experience of doing research in a field that is directly related to my future goals. I studied a statistical method that could theoretically detect gene-gene and gene-environment interaction, which can potentially be applied to linear regression models of diseases.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more statistical knowledge under my belt before I had gone. To fully understand what was being asked of me, I would have needed to take graduate-level statistics courses.

Advice

If you are nervous about not having enough experience for a position, just go for it. No matter what, it will be a learning experience. You can critically analyze your experience and take what you learned to improve future ones.
