Mission: Cure

Scientific Research Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The position was (mostly) remote, but the organization is headquartered in New York. I loved my experience at Mission: Cure, and it was full of constant opportunity to network with professionals working towards curing chronic pancreatitis in a huge variety of ways. The interns were allowed to travel with the organization to a scientific conference focused entirely on pancreatic disease, which was an extremely helpful educational experience as someone who wants to go to graduate school. The staff is friendly and encouraging, and interns are given responsibility, autonomy, and all make meaningful contributions to the organization's work.

What I wish was different

I appreciated the independence and autonomy, but this also meant things would get a little chaotic sometimes. A slightly more structured timeline for intern projects would have made me feel a little more comfortable.

Advice

Get comfortable speaking up sooner rather than later, whether it's networking with professionals outside of the organization, or being able to explain your work and thought process coherently to the rest of the team internally. It's not as intimidating as it seems at first!

Clear and available channels to speak and interact with c level members, opportunities to work with other teams and team leaders on various projects and assignments.
