Miron Construction Co., Inc.

Project Accounting Intern

May - November 2020 • Neenah, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment and culture at Miron. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. I always felt welcome and that they cared about me. I was able to work on lots of different construction projects and see some of them from start to finish which was very interesting to learn the whole process. I worked on different projects like weekly forecasting and labor productivity reports which are very important for the team. There was a variety of different projects and daily tasks which kept the job interesting. I knew that I was doing important work for my team and helping them which really added value to my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to see a project site that I did some of the accounting work for. It is not very common for an intern who works in the office to see one and another reason I wasn't able to go was due to COVID-19.

Advice

I would recommend that many different majors could do this internship not just accounting. It is great for accounting majors but would also be good for economics or finance. I would also recommend to ask lots of questions if you aren't sure of what they are asking you to do. They are very understanding and will explain it in greater length so you feel comfortable doing your job.

What I liked

Great company environment, very centered on learning and actual responsibilities on job sites. I learned far more in this one summer about Project Management than I ever have in the classroom.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been longer so I could have experienced more.

Advice

Ask questions. There is no stupid question, and everyone is always excited to talk about what they do.

Construction Project Management Intern

May - August 2020 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I learned a lot about what I will be doing as my future position at the company I hope to get an offer from. A lot of very nice people who taught me a lot, but yet let me figure it out on my own at times.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to see more phases of the project I was on.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You’re there for a reason, to learn more about your job, to gain experience and to decide if you like the company you could start a career with.

Project Manager Intern

May - August 2019 • Neenah, WI

What I liked

Miron Construction is an exceptional company to work for. As one of the premier general contractor's in the midwest, they manage various different projects from conception to completion. A typical day would include sitting in various meetings with the different trades that were on site as well as bi-weekly meetings with the engineer and owner. Being able to be in the field and not in the office allowed me to get a better understanding of how a project is completed.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish that would have been different is the ability to see different ongoing projects, I was able to visit a few other sites. But definitely would have been interested in seeing more. If you ask your mentor I am sure they would be able to help set up different site visits though.

Advice

Don't be afraid. You may feel intimidated and nervous about going into an industry such as construction where knowledge is pivotal. However, everyone that I encountered on my job site was more than willing to take time out of their day and explain what they were doing and how they were doing it. A lot of the tradespeople are more than willing to share their experiences and talk about the industry as long as you ask them.

What I liked

I liked learning the process of how to demolish an old building and how to start building the new one.

What I wish was different

I wish I wouldn’t have had a presentation at the end so I could enjoy more of what the job entailed.

Try to learn something new everyday

Construction Project Management Intern

May 2018 • Neenah, WI

What I liked

Miron set the bar very high for me after the first summer in 2018 and drove me to come back for another summer. They have built a strong foundation for me to be able to grow and give me the tools to be successful in this industry.

What I wish was different

See larger projects but that will come with time.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions; questions only make you more knowledgeable and a more well rounded individual.

What I liked

I really enjoy working with people who I would never get the opportunity to speak to if it wasn't for my summer job. Athletic training is a totally different field than construction, so I feel well-rounded to experience manual labor and the chance to have met everyone there.

Advice

Really engage yourself in the opportunities that are presented with having an internship. You meet a lot of people who can be a resource to you in the future! Experience and connections are key and getting to work around very experienced people really helps learning the ins and outs of construction a lot easier.
