As a zookeeping intern, I got to interact with the animals on a whole new level. Being able to learn the animals personalities, their likes and their dislikes, when they were having a good or bad day, and their health made me feel even more connected to my future career.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been a paid experience. As a college student, working full-time hours with no compensation was very difficult in the moment and the following months. I was lucky to be able to live with my family and not pay rent and have another job on the side, but I also worked 10 hour days, 6 days a week all summer.
Advice
Seek out opportunities. It is really easy to sit back and wait for others to ask you if you want to do something or see something, but you need to take control of your experience. Many of the things I did were not part of my day-to-day routine, but I expressed an interest in learning more about it and was given the opportunity.
