I liked that I was able to apply my laboratory skills that I learned from my lab classes at Alverno. I was able to analyze data on my own, along with supervision, to build up my confidence in data analysis. Also, I was able to learn how to use new instruments that are not available at Alverno. For my fall semester, I was then able to come back to class with more laboratory experience and confidence in my work. For example, I learned how to calibrate a pH meter, and other probe instruments, on my own. In my biochemistry class this semester, we had to calibrate the pH meters on our own. I was able to help other students to calibrate their probe.

Advice
Don't be afraid to seek out opportunities to narrow down your choices. My experience as a laboratory technician has taught me that I enjoy the laboratory field better than interacting with patients at a hospital. I got to meet other lab techs who had similar experiences like I did. I enjoyed working with water and fertilizer samples and applying my skills from school. I am now one step closer to determining my career.

The hours (6:30-3)
Advice
Very rewarding, but if you are a student who supports themselves it’s very difficult to do with the pay and with the hours (full time) it’s difficult to get a second job since you have to be there at 6:30 am

Project Controls Intern
May - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI
What I liked
I learned new softwares, and what it is like to work in a professional buisness environment. everyone was really suportive and helpful thorugout the whole process.
What I wish was different
I was the only intern in my position and department, so it was difficult for me to meet and connect with the other interns.
Advice
Be confident and ready to learn, I came in with little professional experience and was always trying to show that i could learn the software and am a helpful hand. I also learned so much about water quality which was a very interesting experience, being open to learning more about the company can go a long run. The full time workers will aprreaciate these qualitys and be more open to helping you learn more and have more opportunities in the future.
