Accounting Intern

August 2021 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I like the experience overall. My colleagues were friendly and helpful. The HR Director is very approachable and understanding. Also being that the department was initially understaffed, this gave room to take on bigger responsibilities and figure things out on my own, thus adding to my knowledge and experience. It gave me a new sense of reassurance regarding my abilities as a young professional. Smaller sized companies also allow you to really see the accounting operations on a small scale. Whereas with a larger company, you may have a very specialized role where you don't see all aspects of the accounting procedures involved in the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that individual feedback was given so that it is clear how you're performing according to the company and their expectations. Also, it would've been nice to be cross traded from the beginning on certain things being the amount of change and movement within the company's staffing, so that I would be able to help out more in certain areas. I understand that they likely didn't want to overwhelm interns though. Lastly, more time to shadow the work of full-time employees. However, being the transitions of people in and out of roles, there wasn't as much time.

Advice

I would encourage other young/new professionals to take initiative in their role here, ask as many questions as you have, explore areas that you are interested in. I would also advise to ask for feedback or an evaluation regarding your individual performance so that it is clear how your work ethic and performance is being interpreted. Also, brush up on basic accounting concepts if needed because obviously you are in an accounting role and will be evaluated based on your knowledge of accounting.
