Though I did get other experience besides just first order, second class surveying, I wish I could've gotten a few more different learning opportunities.

Transportation Aide

May - October 2018 • Sterling Heights, MI

What I liked

I liked that working at the C & T lab because it gave me opportunities to work in the office and also get actual field experience collecting samples of aggregates and performing soil borings. I also received training that could prove relevant in any other jobs I may have in the near future. I also learned a lot about the testing process that goes into construction.

What I wish was different

I wish the summer months had been a little busier. Since it was kind of a slow summer, there were a lot of days (especially in May) that I had absolutely nothing to do for eight hours, but there's nothing anyone could really have done about that.

Advice

If you need something to do at work, don't be afraid to ask. Almost everybody, at least at my office, has work they would be happy to receive help with. By doing this, you'll create good relationships which can be helpful in terms of having references for future jobs, and you'll also learn things you would not have learned had you just sat around and waited for the day to pass by.

Student Assistant

May - August 2017 • Lansing, MI

What I liked

I liked the mix of field and office work, and the opportunity to make differences and take initiatives. I was credited by the department for introducing new methodology and procedures for billboard and junkyard inspection, which greatly made me feel accomplished for what I did.

What I wish was different

Better travel options. For road crews, the base of operations was out in Charlotte and it was difficult to reach without a car, before I spent most time at the Lansing office I had to carpool there.

Advice

Make sure you have adequate transportation and make sure to apply for a credit card. You're reimbursed for travel and expenses, but it's good to have for incidentals and emergencies.

Engineering Co-op

May - August 2017 • Pontiac, MI

What I liked

Varied tasks, the people that work around you truly care about you having the best experience and listen to your interests to try to get you information about those sorts of things. Everyone is willing to help, and you are also given real responsibilities, not any meaningless work. Those around you also try to make the summer fun, take you onto construction sites, and plan some field trips such as climbing the Mackinaw Bridge and visiting MCity.

What I wish was different

The office got a little monotonous at times, though not necessarily the work. Being at a computer all day some days was difficult for me, though you can often find ways to get out of the office a few times a week. It is important that you are passionate about road systems and transportation systems in general, and you will really enjoy working here.

Advice

Take initiative, ask questions and do your best on the projects that you are given. Initiative is valued very much by people there, since they tend to be very busy during the summer construction season and have can't guide you along the entire way. Innovation is also stressed. Do a bit of research if you think of something that could improve the systems in place and bring it up to someone.

What I liked

I enjoyed working for the state, they are an excellent employer and are able to offer various positions in different parts of the government.

What I wish was different

I wish that the work I had done would have more toward my future career interests. I worked in the survey department and while I enjoyed it and it was a good experience I think it would have been better if the job fit my interest better.

Advice

Make sure to get all you can out of the job and talk to your supervisor about getting into the area you want to work in or try out.
