Michaels Companies Inc.

sales associate

June - September 2018 • Goleta, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed working amongst other college students and having a flexible schedule. There was also room for promotions within a short span of time (<6 months)

What I wish was different

I wish the management was more genuine towards its employees. The turnover rate was fast so they often did not take the time to get to know us.

Advice

If you enjoy helping people do crafts and hobbies you can turn this into a fun position using passion and creativity.

Instructor

April 2017 • Greenville, NC

What I liked

I like the laid back atmosphere and flexibility of teaching at Michaels. I also love crafting so I'm getting paid to do what I love every day!

What I wish was different

The summer camp lesson plans were split up by age group so I had to teach two classes in one which can be difficult to coordinate. Also there was a lack of organization with student registration so every class was confusing as to who had actually signed up and what my class size was.

Advice

Stay organized and plan ahead whenever possible!

What I liked

I loved the work environment and how friendly the staff was to each other. I also loved doing the events we held at the stores such as the kids club and birthday parties. I mainly did the events and cashiering but I was also on the floor a lot too.

nothing everything was great at the job!

Advice

Get to know your coworkers as they can be life long friends and also try and work events if you can becasue they are super fun!

Part-Time Team Member

June - September 2023 • Riverdale, UT

What I liked

The people you work with are nice, I enjoyed seeing my coworkers. They also offer a 30% discount on select store items which was also nice.

What I wish was different

You get offered no benefits at all if you are a part-time worker; you don't even get sick leave. I had coworkers whose availability was completely disregarded, whether or not they had classes or needed sleep overnight for class in the morning. They pay extremely low for the amount of work, other stores offer nearly double for the same positions (you work the equivalent of a cashier, online pickup and shipment, customer service, janitor, AND stocker). If you work after closing, you'll often have to work overtime as there are not enough people (max five) to close the store, which sometimes can mean you hit the 5-hour mark and should have taken a 30-minute unpaid lunch break during the day (company policy even if over 18). If this happens, the next time you go in you will be unable to clock in until you fill out when you had your lunch break, even if you didn't take one. This, supposedly, means a lunch break is taken from your time.

Advice

If you need a job quickly, they hire everybody, but if you need a liveable wage and reasonable hours, don't work here. They overwork you and underpay you.
