I loved working in the courthouse and helping victims of domestic violence. I learned a lot about how to talk to victims, including safety planning with them and helping them obtain Orders of Protection. The JCAC is an amazing resource in the Nashville community.
What I wish was different
The office can be a little unorganized at times. I wish they had a better buddy system or something in place so that interns could be assigned to an advocate every day in order to gain as much experience as possible on a regular basis.
Advice
The experiences you will have at the JCAC can be shocking. You’re working with victims who have faced a lot of trauma, so you always need to keep that in mind. Other than that, this is a great internship in which you will work alongside a lot of really wonderful people who care deeply about this community.
