Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2019 • Greenville, SC

What I liked

Loved the community and everyone’s willingness to help. I was thrown right into meaningful projects and connected with people from all areas of the business. MetLife cares and wants it’s employees (and interns) to feel important.

What I wish was different

The office in Greenville was smaller, so I wish that was bigger so I could’ve met more people!

Advice

Being thrown into projects without a lot of experience is scary - but well worth it. You were chosen for a reason which means you are capable. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - it’s a learning process. And finally, make sure you meet people and show them you are the “real deal” by grabbing coffee and being willing to help wherever you are needed - even if it means staying late.

MetLife Technical University Intern

May - August 2019 • Whippany, NJ

What I liked

I had the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills, like SQL, JS, Angular, and PowerShell. I learned about Azure DevOps and how to create a secure connection to VMs using Bastion so that I could assist the members of my team in troubleshooting issues when they transitioned to working on Azure DevOps, and I thought it was rewarding to actually be of use. The pay was also very generous.

What I wish was different

The internship program didn't seem very structured in the NJ location. Also, partly because it's such a large corporation, there was not a lot of transparency, so I wasn't really able to see the impact I had. We were also given a group project assignment with the goal of improving MetLife's sustainability, but I was frustrated with the lack of transparency in the entities MetLife supported financially. I did find out that the corporate PAC donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to conservative PACS and political candidates with harmful environmental policies, and that MetLife Investments Management invests a lot in oil companies, which seems to conflict with the sustainability commitment quite a bit.

Advice

If considering MTU, I would suggest applying for the Cary, North Carolina location. The internships there seemed a lot more structured, and there is a larger community of interns and more relaxed culture on the campus there.

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2019 • Bridgewater Township, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed the sense of community and support I felt during my summer at MetLife. I was presented with real world projects, and got to give presentations of my findings to the other interns as well as the VP of my department.

What I wish was different

I wish my manager had had more time to spend with me, but other than than I wouldn’t change anything about my time at MetLife!

Advice

Take advantage of everything the program has to offer and ask a ton of questions.
