Patient Care Assistant

April 2020 - August 2021 • Anderson Township, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed getting the experience working in a hospital environment. As a nursing major, being comfortable on the floor with hospital machinery and documentation is extremely important.

What I wish was different

I had issues with the management at Mercy Health that ultimately led me to switch to a different hospital system. I wish that all the managers were consistent with rules and that the company had more respect for their employees and not just the patients.

Advice

Take in-college work experiences with a grain of salt. Not every work environment will be the same. If you have a bad experience do not be afraid to move on and keep trying; it does not mean that you are in the wrong field. College/ early post-graduation years are times of learning.

Marketing Intern

December 2017 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

This was great professional experience! I was the first intern to hold this position, so I was really able to build and construct the position to what I thought would be most beneficial to my long-term career. I was able to learn more about both the marketing and communications involved with the healthcare industry, and really got to see what marketing looks like on a day-to-day basis. Great first internship.

What I wish was different

There were some aspects that seemed a little redundant - most days involved many of the same tasks. Overall, though, there were often events that helped break up the day and let me spend some time away from my desk.

Advice

Be sure you have a solid understanding on time management, organization, and communication. There are often projects with hard deadlines, overlapping projects, and hundreds of people you have to contact to keep everything straight. Keep careful track of your endeavors to ensure you're fulfilling the job to your fullest potential.

Project Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

Everyone in the department truly cares about the patient experience and they are all really helpful when I first started. I got to conduct a lot of site visits to better understand the processes. My supervisor was very helpful and always gave me good feedback when I need it.

What I wish was different

This is the first year that Mercy is doing an internship program and they just finished the merger. So follow-up after the program could be better developed to retain talents.

Advice

Always ask questions and be willing to learn.
