Mercury Marine

Polymer Co-op

January - July 2023 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

I loved the ability Mercury Marine gives for all CO-OP students to see all of the headquarters facilities. I was given several opportunities to learn about more then just the job that I was hired to preform which in turned allowed me to further examine the corporate world and explore the other job paths that I could potentially take. Along with being able to see several different jobs at Mercury, I had the opportunity to look at many of the parts Mercury produces themselves. Having the ability and opportunity to put my hands on several projects during my work experience allowed for me to gain more extensive knowledge as I was able to see several different types of polymers and all under different situations. Mercury Marine created and fostered a wonderful environment for their co-op students to learn, explore, and thrive.

What I wish was different

Nothing stands out, I had a wonderful experience with Mercury Marines co-op opportunity.

Advice

I recommend everyone to take every opportunity that is given to you during this experience. Mercury is amazing at giving their co-op opportunity to experience not only cooperate life but life around their town of Fond Du Lac and I would advise that you take the opportunity to break out of your shell. A co-op is a time for you to explore and learn so take that to heart and don't be afraid to say yes to opportunities even if you're nervous. Along with this is don't be afraid to ask questions, you are there to learn so you're going to have questions.

What I liked

I really enjoyed how everyday was different. I work on many different tasks across multiple projects during my time. The team I worked with was very helpful and knowledgeable. If I had any questions, they would be sure to assist and help.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would've done more work in the data processing software. I feel like I still had a lot to learn on it.

Advice

You will get what you put into this role. The team is willing to give you work, but you need to show you can handle it. Always be willing to try anything that is asked because you never know if you'll find something you're doing that you may become passionate about.

Engineering Intern

May - September 2018 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

The exposure to industry applications and resources that showed me what I actually might be able to work with one day.

What I wish was different

The environments pace was not very tuned to that of a new hire and so my projects were hindered by that.

Advice

What you learn in school is actually really important, take it seriously and learn as much as you can because the things that I thought I would use the most on the job ended up being far less used than some of the other things that I thought were less important.

Marketing Specialist

June - December 2018 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

I did some research on open positions for this company before I attended the Career Fair on the Fox last spring. I found a position open, applied on their website, and then I talked to them about it directly at the career fair. They fast tracked me through the hiring process afterwards, I accepted the position, and worked full time throughout the summer. By the end of the summer, I was offered a full time job after graduation. I accepted, and now I have a great opportunity lined up that properly fits my career goals. I like the whole experience.

What I wish was different

I was able to mold this internship/co-op experience to fit my graduation/education and career goals, so I wouldn't want anything else to be different.

Advice

Use the career fair to the fullest! Download the app, research the companies, and take a look before going. This gives you the most out of the career fair and makes you stand out similar to how I did in order to land the perfect job to launch my career after graduation.

Marketing Coordinator Intern

May - September 2017 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

I loved learning about a new industry that I was not familiar with at the start of the position, but my favorite part about this company was the company culture. I actually enjoyed coming to work everyday and I was devastated when I had to leave to go back to school. This is a great company and I highly recommend it to any prospective marketing student.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a little more focus in marketing analytics because that is where the money is and I am thinking about getting my MBA in this area. However, I did get a focus in PR which was exhilarating and informational.

Advice

Come up with your own way of doing things and management will always take it into consideration. It'll show that you are an innovative rockstar and that you are capable of thinking outside of the box. If you really want to shine, you can't go with the flow. Come up with something innovative!
