Mendocino Land Trust

Student Internship and Programs Coordinator

June 2021 • Fort Bragg, CA

What I liked

I liked that I got to experience working in the field in my area of study. I got to meet new people from the community and meet all of the staff members. People were willing to give advice and share their experiences in the field. I got to learn about the roles that land trusts have in creating more access to public lands.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have communicated my needs and wants with how I can develop my professional experience and time management. There were tasks that I had to complete on my own to experience being a manager in the field. I also could have asked for help when I needed it because I tend to be the one who does tasks by myself and figure it out on my own.

Advice

One piece of advice I have is not to be afraid of being seen and put yourself out there. If there is a need you would like to see an organization doing, start to network with their board members and staff by volunteering and reaching out to them. Ask about job opportunities or create your own. Pitch an idea about a role that you can take on as a job opportunity and share your vision. Make sure it is something you are passionate about and aligns with their mission. Let your interest be noticed by advocating for yourself, and following up on action steps to make it possible.

Salmon Restoration Intern

June - August 2021 • Fort Bragg, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the wide variety of different tasks I did while on the job. In just one day, I could be out in the field checking on trails, then in the office writing conservation easements, then go back in the field to install a new sign.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more than just 10 weeks in the job, since there was so much to learn. I got to try so many new things and wish that I could have had more time to experience all the new things.

Advice

Just apply! I did not think I would get selected, but I did! Also be ready to be flexible, since the work can sometimes hold surprises.

Intern

June - August 2018 • Fort Bragg, CA

What I liked

I loved everything about this internship. What I enjoyed most was the variety of tasks I was assigned and expected to finish. We wrote a grant for a restoration project, took part in volunteer days, performed stream habitat monitoring, sampled valley oak trees, and so much more.
