Meharry Medical College

Biology Laboratory Assistant

May - July 2022 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

The extra enrichment sessions were cool. We got to see professionals talk about their research, as well as learn more about how cancer was treated.

What I wish was different

I wish that the actual research had been able to progress a little bit faster

Advice

Remember that at the end of the day, working in a lab is meant to be a learning experience. Learn from your mentors and learn from your mistakes.

Research assistant

May - July 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I loved how I not only had one mentor, but I had several mentors and was able to interact with students who are in programs that I am interested in such as MD, MD/PhD and master’s programs.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to still work with them. I hate that my research has to stop once the summer ended and I can no longer help finish it.

Advice

Take chances. Although I had never done research before, going was worth it. It was frustrating at times, but I persevered and realized I can do it.

Summer Research Student

May - July 2018 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

During this summer program I was a Ken to connect with my different students from states all over the U.S. to study various types of cancer. I was able to learn about the heath disparities that were specific to Tennessee , my home state, and the ways I could make a difference in these things.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more volunteer/shadowing opportunities provided in the program.

Advice

Take in all the information you can and if you’re in a new place, visit as many local places as you can. Ask lot s of questions and stay dedicated to your task no matter how hard it gets.
