Hearing Screen Technician

August 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Interacting with babies, early detection of potential hearing loss, good experience in a hospital setting, learned how to use a more formal register when relaying medical information, independent work, ability to meet many different people from all walks of life.

What I wish was different

I was expected to travel to a few different hospitals and was not compensated for gas. The machine I used simply told me 'pass' or 'fail', and not 'hearing' or 'deaf', so if a baby did not pass the screen many parents would demand to know whether or not their baby is actually deaf. I did not have the means to provide them with an answer and occasionally they would become angry.

Advice

Don't be afraid to make mistakes, they are fixable. Be patient and understanding with the parents, having a baby is an extremely vulnerable experience. If someone snaps at you remember there are a lot of hormones going on during this time.
