MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip Volunteer

May 2019 • Lima, Lima Province

What I liked

I loved having the chance to gain medical exposure in a different environment and entirely different culture. I had the chance to use my skills to help and understand the medical system of a different country. I traveled to Lima as part of the MEDLIFE organization, where we traveled to different regions of Lima to provide free medical care and support for people who had limited access to it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to spend a longer period of time on the service learning trip. I only had the chance to spend a week in Lima; however, it was an amazing opportunity gaining medical exposure and expanding my Spanish-language skills. I only wish I had the resources to stay longer and learn more.

Advice

Always remember a moment. Being in a different country for the first time was a life-changing experience. It gave me a new outlook and made me appreciate every interaction I had with someone. I treasured conversations I had with others, even if my Spanish was at the novice level.

Volunteer

August 2018 • Cusco, Cusco Region

What I liked

I loved learning. It was an experience like no other. I learned about medicine, and education. As well as learning about the culture in Peru. There was enough time to explore and enjoy Peru while still being a learning environment.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had more time. I felt like we didn't have the chance to help enough people while we were there.

Advice

If every given the opportunity, take it. Go. I almost didn't and I know I would have regretted it.
