Medela LLC

Product Development Engineer Co-Op

May - June 2018 • McHenry, IL

What I liked

I loved working at Medela! There were so many great people that I worked with in my department as well as within the rest of the company. I really enjoyed the projects I was working on and felt like I was making an impact in my role. I had an outstanding supervisor who became a huge mentor to me.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, my time there came to an abrupt ending when I was "laid-off" along with 3 other college students due to the company reorganizing at the executive level and budget cuts (not performance based); 40+ people were let go in one day. So I wish it didn't end so quickly; I was even slated to return in Spring 2019 for my last co-op education term. I've now had to apply to new job positions in order to fulfill my graduation requirement.

Advice

Learn to ask the "hard questions" in interviews, such as how do you handle loss of market-share, recessions, and how does the company see the value of "job security"? Truly get to know your co-workers, especially those who you can look to for long-term advice.

What I liked

This experience gave me a lot of real experience in the career path so have chosen. It has already allowed me to better understand the application of what we learn in class and better answer questions about my goals, skills, and aspirations in interviews for other jobs.
