Mechanical Contracting Intern

May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I liked being exposed to the Mechanical Contracting industry. It was really good experience, despite the fact that I was not offered a job. I also enjoyed learning Revit, Navisworks and the Building Information Modeling process. I started drafting classes in high school, but every software is different.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten to see more of the mechanical contracting industry. I got out in the field maybe three times all summer. I don't particularly enjoy being stuck in an office all of the time. I enjoy drafting, but I could tell pretty early on that it is not what I wanted to do for my career. It would have been nice to experience some of the other aspects of the company.

Advice

Clarify your employer's goals for internships early. You may have your own ideas about what you want to get out of an internship. Your employer may have different ideas. Ask a lot of questions. The people that mentor you while you are in an internship position are there to help you learn. They are a resource for you to use just as you are a resource for them.
