MBIA, Inc.

IT Infrastructure & Corporate Systems Intern

June 2019 • Purchase, NY

What I liked

Loved the close community between different departments. It provided opportunities to work on different assignments over the summer that were of great value. I also loved the Day in the Life meeting a where Tech interns met with higher ups in the company to discuss how they got to their position and what tech skills the company (and other companies in general) values. The intern and corporate lunches were also great and a lot of fun. It was a great balance between work, learning, and fun. 10/10

What I wish was different

I wish I had started doing more security work in the beginning but it was also good to work in different departments to see what interested me.

Advice

Ask for opportunities, don’t wait for them to possibly come to you because you’ll be waiting for a long time while others are getting ahead.

Internal Audit Intern

May - August 2018 • Purchase, NY

What I liked

I liked that the employees were accommodating and understanding that we were learning. The other interns and I were able to learn very quickly, as we were given frequent feedback. Also, I liked learning to operate in a corporate environment with a structured schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute was shorter because I had to drive an hour each way. Also, I wish there was a little more variety in the work we did, though we were doing real work and I appreciated that.

Advice

I would say that when you start to work 35-40 hours a week, it can be a big adjustment in terms of sleep schedule and work-life balance, especially if it's your first time working full time. Also, communication is key, so if you ever have any questions, do not be afraid to ask. You are expected to be learning, and sometimes the questions are helpful for others.

Accounts Payable

March 2018 • Purchase, NY

What I liked

This job offers me a lot of professional experiences such as working with journal entries, preforming bank reconciliations, wiring money, cutting checks and so much more. Every day that I am here I am practicing my social and technological skills while taking appropriate steps to be the best intern possible. MBIA also wants me to grow was a student. Over the summer, my supervisors made it possible for me to not only work in accounts payable but they opened me up to other departments such as the Tax and Financial Reporting departments. While working with these different departments, I got a look into what each person does to help sustain this company and keep things running smoothly.

What I wish was different

If one thing could have been different I think I would change my interaction with other inters. During the summer, MBIA hires interns for audit and IT. I lacked interaction with other interns because I was involved in helping all the departments that I was assisting. I think it is important to separate work from your social life so maybe going out to lunch with the interns once in a while would have been a good separation from work for that hour but also a good interaction with other students my age.

Advice

Once piece of advice I would give is to absorb as much information and experiences as you can, while interning.
