Mayor's Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity

Food Policy Fellowship Coordinator

May - August 2017 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I had a lot of responsibility and really enjoyed working with my supervisor

What I wish was different

The office relies heavily on free labor- it is understaffed and underfunded. After my boss who had a master's degree quit I had a great deal of her work and was still being compensated via work study. It was hard to find support within the office because everyone was already overworked.

Advice

Take advantage of all new opportunities presented within teh office.

Place-Based Initiatives Fellow

June - August 2018 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved my specific project and the opportunity to do project-based work. I was doing research into health providers in West Philadelphia and mapping their concentration in order to look at what policy briefs might do to make health care more accessible.

What I wish was different

I would have liked a little bit more structure outside of my project. My boss was good about inviting me to meetings that she thought I would like, but when I was waiting for people to get back to me on my project, I basically had nothing to do.

Advice

Definitely ask for help if you need it! I was worried about asking for help because I wanted to prove I was qualified to do it, but people actually appreciated interns who were willing to ask for help.
