Mayo Clinic

Research Fellow

May - August 2017 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

Mayo Clinic is an absolutely fantastic and inspiring institution. Additionally, everybody there was very welcoming, accommodating, and offered to help in any way possible to make this an enjoyable and productive experience for me.

What I wish was different

Because I was considered a "non-employee" (not an official paid student intern) I did not enjoy the gym benefits.

Advice

I got this through reaching out to my professor and joining his lab, so I encourage others to do the same. Also, prepare to work very independently and have your own creative ideas. My internship was not structured at all, and I was responsible for finding my own ultimate research topic.

Summer III Extern

June - August 2017 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed that I was able to work with a nurse and get to learn how to be a nurse.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to do more technical skills such as give medications, but instead I learned how to effectively present the medication and education to the patients.

Advice

I would want to make sure a future intern knows to keep their mind open about different opportunities for nursing careers--I learned about ICU nursing, flight nursing, med-surg nursing, and other nursing skills beyond that of my specified unit.

Research Fellow

June - August 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

The Mayo Clinic is an incredible force of nature, where tradition, innovation, and above all, proper care for the patient come first. I learned so much from a personal and professional standpoint and enjoyed every minute of my time there.

What I wish was different

Rochester was a bit more expensive to live in than originally anticipated. Granted, it is one of the premier locations in MN so I had to budget my expenses accordingly.

Advice

Never think you're not qualified enough to put in an application, because you never know. Wherever you are for a summer, think beyond that temporary time frame and see if this is somewhere you can see yourself for the long term.

Biostatistics Intern

June - August 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to see how people apply statistics to real problems and the collaboration process between investigators and statisticians. My mentors were passionate about their careers and would take the time to answer all of my questions and teach me new methods. Mayo Clinic has a great work environment and I would highly recommend this type of experience to anyone who is interested in statistics or biostatistics.

Summer Research Fellow

May - August 2017 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I loved the people, the whole work culture and learning environment fostered there.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been a little longer because it was hard to complete a small research project within a span of 10 weeks.

Advice

Work hard and go the extra mile, because you'll learn so much more that way.

Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I liked the balance between autonomy and guidance that my boss provided me with. I felt supported, but was able to go outside of my comfort zone and learn new skills. My colleagues went above and beyond to help me get as much as possible out of this summer internship (ie inviting me to attend meetings, lectures, etc).

What I wish was different

I wish it had been just a bit longer - there was so much to do, and I wish I had more time to explore all of the amazing opportunities that were available to me while I was an intern.

Advice

Go for it - it will help you to see a side of healthcare that you may not be able to experience elsewhere!

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

Amazing real-world experience. I was able to see daily life in the Sports Medicine Center as well as have a ton of exposure to the many different research projects that my Private Investigator was working on simultaneously. I was alos able to observe a handful of doctors and orthopedic surgeons at the end of the summer!

What I wish was different

I wish I had moved to Rochester for the summer. I chose to commute from Northfield daily, and that added a lot of (unpaid) time to my day and made it a little harder to get up in the mornings!

Advice

Do all the little things that make you a fun, easy, and rewarding person to work with. Be the team player. Give people the opportunuty to love your work ethic and personality!
