May Institute, Inc.

ABA Intern

May - August 2022 • Randolph, MA

What I liked

I liked that I got to have a very personal and hands-on experience of working with individuals with autism. The interns were well-trained to enter the field and there was always support if needed.

What I wish was different

It was a very intense experience in terms of time commitment and also the work that we did. After training, you shadow someone working with the students until you are prepared to work with them on your own. However, I think that I was underprepared for the emotional toll that this line of work takes on a person.

Advice

I would say that if you are applying for this internship, definitely do your research about working with students with autism. I think it is a good experience to have as long as you are good about being aware of your physical and emotional limits. It is okay to say that something is too much in terms of some of the tasks that may be asked of you. You will be a lot happier and gain a lot more respect if you are honest about what you can and can not handle, but also be open to trying new things.

Intern

What I liked

The children and my coworkers including management/administration! The organization treats its employees very well and everyone is so nice! The children are awesome to work with as well!

What I wish was different

It felt unnecessary for our schedule to be from 7:30-4:00 it should have been from 8:00-3:30.

Advice

Go through with the entire internship, don't quit! It's very challenging and tiring but also very rewarding and you learn a lot and completing it leaves you with a great deal of satisfaction.

What I liked

I loved the environment and the work that we were doing. I was able to work closely with very experienced people and learned so much about the population, ABA, AVB, and how to teach in adaptive ways. This internship was the reason I changed my major and plans for employment post-graduation.

What I liked

The May Institute is great learning environment. I learned a lot about behavior analysis and the different types of jobs that are available if I obtained my Bcba. The employees are very hard working and put their student's safety first.
