What I liked

I loved getting the experience of working in a lab as a statistician and being able to see what the role entailed. It was cool to see how grad students lived and really opened my mind up to the idea of going to grad school.

What I wish was different

I only had time to go for a month, and I wish I had gone for longer because I could have done more and it was so valuable. The work I was doing was also really challenging and I found myself being antsy after sitting at a computer for so many hours so that was good for me to experience and realize I would want to work somewhere a little more social.

Advice

EMAIL THE DIRECTORS OF LABS AND ASK TO WORK FOR THEM!!! Tell them about the skills that you have and what would would like to do for them. Literally all of their emails are online, that is how I found this cool opportunity. I applied through a lot of programs for interns with no luck, but once I just started emailing the Principal Investigators all around Europe I got two offers for unpaid internships right away. Then you can apply for various grants through UVA to try to sponsor the experience, or the lab might be willing to pay you. They take on interns all the time, it is very routine and there is a whole process. Just ask!
