Software Engineering Intern

March 2018 • Mankato, MN

What I liked

I like how we get to work on Thomson Reuters code and participate in meetings with the team remotely. We are given the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals and learn from them about the job and get tips for our future. I have also learned valuable technical skills, such as debugging code which is not working as expected. It is also a very accommodating job as a student because we get to pick our own hours with the only criteria being that we work twenty hours a week. I currently have Friday off which gives me time to take care of school related tasks and study.

What I wish was different

Nothing, this has been a great job which I have learned a lot from.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. As a student, nobody expects you to know everything. People are willing to help and teach you if you approach them and ask in a respectful way.

Software Engineering Intern

August 2016 • Mankato, MN

What I liked

Very relaxed atmosphere, as there was never any huge rush put on you. As long as you got your work done on time you could talk with you co-workers. Also, Chuck is an incredible boss who helps you to find jobs once you get close to graduation.

What I wish was different

I do with I would have known a bit more what to expect coming in to my internship, but what I do ended up being complicated enough where it would have been hard to explain in an e-mail or phone call.

Advice

You definitely need to treat it as a job, and not just an internship. I know when some people think of an internship, they think that its something that they can kinda skimp on, but if you work hard and treat it like you are already at your full-time position, you'll be able to have a better chance at getting offers after.
