assistant manager

May 2017 • Byron Center, MI

What I liked

The coworkers and the customers. I spent every day investing myself in the happiness of my customers and making sure they felt valued and beautiful in what they purchased. I also took the time to invest in my team members and continue their training so that they can advance through the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have kept my pay from being a key-holding manager when I bumped back down to stylist over the school year. That would have been fantastic, as I worked at least 40 hours each week at this job as a part-time manager to support another store. I feel like I deserve to keep that raise they gave me to cover gas expenses.

Advice

If they ask if you are interested in helping at another store or in an advancement opportunity, say YES! They asked if I was interested in becoming a manager two years ago, I said I was interested and it sounded like fun and here we are-- I LOVE this job! They continue to ask me to support at other locations because they know that I am a hard worker and will perform well in any environment.

Stylist

November 2018 - October 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Maurices was a very warm, welcoming, and supportive work environment. I loved every second of this work experience, and it helped me gain more "people skills," communication skills, and how to make good connections with customers.

What I wish was different

Something I wish had been different was scheduling. I wish I could have worked more hours, and that the schedules were put out more than a week in advance so I could plan.

Advice

My advice is to soak it all up and learn as much as possible! this job definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, and definitely forced me to come out of my shell. If you embrace the discomfort, you will grow so much as a person.

Stylist

May - November 2016 • Paris, TX

What I liked

I like working retail so any job is fun. The cash register does everything automatically so it is super easy and fast to check people out. We got new merchandise in frequently.

What I wish was different

I most of the time worked by myself or with one other person, which wasn't ideal. Cleaning to store after hours could take up to two hours. We had to dress a season ahead so for summer we had to dress in fall clothes. The training is a lengthy process before you are allowed to be on the floor. When you start out, they give you labor tasks such as cleaning the bathroom, fitting rooms, vacuuming and dusting, while they tag, recover, and check inventory.

Advice

I would ask other employees in that particular store what their experiences have been and decide if you would like to continue with this career or summer job.

What I liked

Maurices is a friendly environment, that offers flexible schedules and a 40% employee discount.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I love my job.

Advice

Retail is not for everyone. While it’s not mentally taxing, it is physical work and requires good verbal communication skills.

Visual Merchandising Intern

May - August 2019 • Chillicothe, OH

What I liked

I love this company, and have worked for them for years. Making women feel beautiful by styling them is my favorite.

What I wish was different

I couldn't get an internship, so I had to have one basically created for me, most of the time I was just doing my normal job with a few extra visual things here and there. I wish it could have been a little more corporate.

Advice

Keep going and don't give up! The internship process is hard and if you keep getting rejected, there is a good chance it's not because of you.
