MassMutual

Summer Intern

June - August 2019 • Warren Township, NJ

What I liked

Very hands-on. They also pushed us to get certified to sell life insurance, which can set up a career in the industry.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have seen more of the business. I would recommend asking to see if you can spend part of your summer in a specific department.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you have since there are many aspects of the internship that can be confusing if you aren't a professional.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2019 • Springfield, MA

What I liked

I loved the work culture! The dress code was 'appropriate' where on normal day you can go in with jeans and a polo, and on days where you meet senior leadership (which happens often in the program) you put on a blazer. The program provides living accommodations and pays fairly well.

What I wish was different

The soft skill workshops that are available during the program are lacking in substance.

Advice

Work hard, be personable, and take initiative, its a big company so you need to go the extra mile to get noticed.

Enterprise Technology Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Springfield, MA

What I liked

The environment was very accepting of LGBTQ+ people. Everyone in the company was extremely nice, and they all wanted to make sure the interns were getting the best experience possible. They treated us like equals, and it was nice feeling like our work was making a difference.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more say in where I was initially placed.

Advice

Be open-minded and curious about new experiences and opportunities

Data Analytics Intern

May - August 2019 • Springfield, MA

What I liked

I worked all summer on a single project with a meaningful impact on the company. I was attached to a great team in a wonderful environment. There were also many intern specific activities.

What I wish was different

There was a lack of organization on MassMutual's part for interns in the tech section. Some of us (I was lucky) were not given work to do for most of the time there. MassMutual was however aware of this and receptive to feedback. I'd assume this to be much better in future years as they're changing the requirements for managers to have interns (ie for them to have solid projects to work on).

What I liked

Great company. Lots to do. Great intern experience.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been more structured by the intern coordinator staff. They were not overly involved and much less involved than years past.

Advice

Be open to taking any opportunity given to you. Do any job, just do it. Looks really good to everyone on your team and be open to learn.

Insurance Operations Intern

May - August 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

There was a lot of autonomy and ways to learn more about the company from other departments. It was easy to get in contact with senior leaders and they were always so supportive. The Early Career Program is a great opportunity for growth and I loved my experience.

What I wish was different

I was the only intern out in Phoenix and I wish I had more interns to relate to and hang out with. But, when I visited the HQ in Springfield I got to hang out with all the other interns and it was always a blast! They are having more interns in Phoenix this year too so they are growing.

Advice

Take every opportunity you can! There were a ton networking activities and learning events that I had the option to go to since it was all over Skype, but I always took the opportunity and I am so glad I did. You are only there for a few months so I would recommend taking advantage of everything!
