Massachusetts Trial Court

Law Library Assistant

July 2022 • Woburn, MA

What I liked

I would have loved to work here - it was a perfect fit for my skills and aspirations. The job this library does is extremely necessary given the vast disparity between people's enormous legal needs and the debilitating cost of professional legal services. The people who work there are likewise friendly, helpful, compassionate, and intelligent.

What I wish was different

I wish the hiring manager had gone with the recommendation of her subordinates, who selected me for the role they wished to fill.

Advice

Beware of relying on verbal statements. The people who choose candidates for this employer, and communicate those with candidates, are not actually the final hiring managers. I was offered the position by phone, heard nothing for a month, and was unceremoniously told they'd gone with someone else after I prompted them several times for an update. Patronage and nepotism appear to be the order of the day.

Intern

June - August 2022 • Greenfield, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed how much I was able to learn about the Trial Court system and experience it for myself first hand. This internship also allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and grow as a person.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would say if you are able to be in person for the internship I was able to gain a lot more and it felt more rewarding to see the litigants you're helping. Also, I think it can be intimidating at first but don't be afraid to just try!

Intern

June - August 2021 • Lawrence, MA

What I liked

A lot of experience with constituents. There was a hands-off approach that allowed me to figure things out for myself and learn legal processes in respective situations.

What I wish was different

If the job was not virtual. Hands-on experience would have been the best for this position.

Advice

Take it a day at a time. You will not know everything your first day or week, but with more experience, the job gets easier.

Intern

May - August 2020 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

My supervisor at the Worcester Court Service Center was amazing and so understanding throughout the craziness of COVID. He really valued intern input and allowed us to do a lot of hands on work!

What I wish was different

I wish COVID hadn't forced the internship to be virtual but the Court Service Center was very good at adapting and in the end I was able to do all of the task I had been looking forward too.

Advice

This internship is what you make of it! I would say that you should really try everything that is available to you even if you are nervous at first!
