Massachusetts House of Representatives

Intern

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about the interworking of state government. This included not only the administrative aspects of the MA House of Representatives, but also what the daily office environment was like. I especially enjoyed meeting several high profile government officials, like Governor Charlie Baker and former Governor Michael Dukakis.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been able to attend more events held in the constituents' community. Richard Haggerty, the Representative I worked for, represented both my town, Reading, and the adjacent Woburn. I would have liked to accompany him on more meetings in Reading or Woburn and to meet more of his constituents, my neighbors.

Advice

Many politically-active university students wish to get involved in politics, but they don't know where is the best place to start. I recommend learning about your local politics and meeting with your State Senator or State Representative. You can learn so much more on how you can affect governance in your home state, and especially how to positively impact your community.

What I liked

I was treated as a professional and was entrusted with engaging work. I felt like I was doing meaningful work and talking to people who cared about what they were doing. This made me understand the importance of a job in government.

Advice

One piece of advice is to ask for as many projects as possible. Whenever I finished up a small job, I went directly to my superior to ask for more work. Through this, I was able to attend extra hearings and learn so much more about policy in the State House.

Legislative Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I liked the Summer Speaker Series for the interns and the flexible work schedule. It was also great exposure to how the Massachusetts State Government operates.

What I wish was different

I wish that they had more of an actual position for me where I felt like I was more useful to them.

Advice

It is a good first internship but I would make an effort to seek out more responsibility in the role if possible.

What I liked

I enjoyed having first hand experience in the legislative process within a local, state system.

What I wish was different

That there were less interns there - at times it was very crowded.

Advice

Get there early. Always take notes. Do not be afraid to ask questions or introduce yourself to senators or representatives.
