I had an amazing experience working for the Massachusetts DPH in the Environmental Health unit. This internship provided a great balance between data analysis and input and field work, where I learned about tracking and monitoring indoor air quality. I had the opportunity to develop a number of skills, both technical and interpersonal. My supervisor still serves as a mentor and a wonderful resource for advice regarding school and employment.
What I wish was different
The internship involved a bit more data entry than I had imagined, and I wish I was able to spend even more time doing field work.
Advice
Prior to this internship, I had not focused on environmental health in any of my professional positions. I intentionally took this position to learn more about what environmental health entails within the context of a governmental public health organization. I recommend taking jobs or internships in areas of a discipline that you have not been exposed to in the past -- it's a great way to contextualize everything you have learned and to expose yourself to new experiences that might end up being highly beneficial and interesting to you.
