Environmental Trainee

May - August 2022 • Marshfield, MA

What I liked

I liked every aspect of this job. Being out in the field, collecting data on piping plover activity is always exciting. Knowing that you are making a difference through conservation feels great.

What I wish was different

The most challenging thing for me was interacting with the public. This is because, you never know how people are going to respond. At Mass Audubon, you are putting nature first, some people are really receptive to that while others are not. You never know what you will get. I had mostly great interactions, and as we continue to educate people I think it will get better.

Advice

This role is 5 days a week, your days off will usually be rainy days. Bring lots of water and sunscreen!

Research Intern

May - July 2019 • Wellfleet, MA

What I liked

Loved the flexible hours and sense of independence that was given to myself and the team.

What I wish was different

I wish that we would have been able to work for longer over the summer, as we protected turtle nests but didn't get to see them hatch. Also, the job could have been integrated with other entities like IFAW or the Fish and Wildlife Service, etc

Advice

Take meticulous notes throughout the internship of your hours, what you got done, all turtle encounters and nest found. I wished I had been more organized when the experience was over and it was time to turn in the required documents, including a detailed itinerary of what my team and I accomplished.

Summer camp counselor

July - August 2019 • Topsfield, MA

What I liked

I loved being outside in the nature leading summer art classes. We got to go on a lot of trails through out the sanctuary. I liked how we had to write out lesson plans each day because that better prepared me for my art lessons. The staff was also great to work with.

What I wish was different

I really loved the job and wouldn’t change much.

Advice

Always be prepared to know how to handle kids better and have a few different methods of how to handle kids behavioral management. Usually kids are motivated by something and once you find out what motivates them you can use that to your advantage!

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Lincoln, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed spending time with the kids and getting to know them. I loved being with the farm animals. I liked being outside instead of being forced to stay inside.

What I wish was different

I wish that the work was split up more evenly. My co-workers sometimes just laid back and didn't help out much when it came to set up, clean up, or just supervising/ interacting with the campers.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for help when needed.

Camp Educator

June - August 2018 • Mattapan, MA

What I liked

The looseness of the daily schedule, and the ability to base our lesson plans around the personalities within our groups.

What I wish was different

I wish that personally had trusted myself to take on lessons and age groups that I felt nervous about.

Advice

Be ready for anything, and take this job as an opportunity to make deeper connections and perform more impressive tasks than you ever thought yourself to be capable of doing.
