Biology Laboratory Assistant

June - August 2018 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

The atmosphere was extremely friendly and the lab environment was top of the line and updated! Everyone was very friendly and supportive. This job required a lot of repetition and unsupervised, independent work. I worked with 1 other intern. The hours were the night shift, so 3pm-9pm (so you can still enjoy the summertime and go to the pool!). The facilities have 24/7 guards that even walk you to your car at night to assure your safety.

What I wish was different

Parking was very expensive and difficult to find.

Advice

Apply if you like repetitive lab work! This internship focused in the water microbiology laboratory.

Water Microbiology Lab Technician

July - August 2018 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

The atmosphere was extremely welcome and friendly. Everyone was helpful and patient in teaching me how to analyze fecal coliforms. Working in the lab was very busy, but there was also free time to work on writing papers and/or reading for pleasure.

What I wish was different

Not a lot I wish to be different. The commute into Baltimore City was a struggle, however, worth it.

Advice

It is crucial to try different internships/experiences until you know exactly what field you want to be in. During my time at the Water Microbiology Laboratory, I learned that I like lab work, but also prefer a hybrid of lab work and field work. I was content for the summer doing the same lab procedures, however, I know that for a career I would want something more interesting that keeps me on my toes. I would also NOT rely on Towson University for internship opportunities. There were extremely few science internships Towson recommends. The most important part is to not rely on the University to get internships; do your own research and apply to internships that YOU find.
