Advice
Working here is a blessing! The patients are so kind and they love seeing you everyday. Just remember, that sometimes they are in pain, so they may be a little grouchy at times. The important aspect of being a healthcare provider is that you show kindness and patience.

Volunteer in Spinal Cord Injury Gym
April - August 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI
What I liked
I loved forming relationships with the patients and learning more about the field of Occupational Therapy. Because it was Inpatient Rehab, a lot of the patients stayed there for an extended period of time and I loved being able to form relationships with them and watch them improve week after week.
What I wish was different
I happened to have a volunteer shift on a Friday afternoon, so the gym was often times not busy, so next time I am going to try to get a shift towards the beginning of the week.
Advice
Volunteer early for grad school and volunteer lots in lots of different places! Take time to get to know patients by name and really make the best of the opportunity to learn in a professional setting!
