Global Tax Intern

June - November 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Every day was busy and there was always something to do. They were always willing to answer questions and help out. This was my first accounting related experience, and I certainly learned a lot about the difference between what we learned in class and what I actually did.

What I wish was different

The work variety? I know that as interns, there's only so much we can do with our limited knowledge as well as the time that we are there for. I don't know how to word it, but I felt like I was just doing busy work most of the time. I didn't feel like I actually contributed to anything. This wasn't true for ALL of the work I did there. There was a few projects I was on that I felt like I was contributing to something. Or perhaps there could have been better communication about the end product of our work.

Advice

Specific to the department I was in: I would say that the most important traits is that you have to be able to work independently ( and teams when needed) and knowing how to group your questions together to ask them. Most of the time, the office was really quiet and everyone was focused on their tasks. I don't know if this was due to the time period I interned for (summer). Like perhaps they are really busy for summer and are more relaxed during other time periods? One of the other interns I worked with was really curious about everything (the processes, how the department gathered information, etc). Not that they didn't encourage curiousity, but they were being a little obnoxious about the questions they were asking. They were asking a question every 5 mins, but when we would have meetings specifically for debriefing or asking questions, they wouldn't ask any.

What I wish was different

It was a hard job. I worked up to 65-80 hours a week from 8:00 pm to 7:30 am, seven days a week. One thing I think should have been different was at lest one day off every 2 weeks

I'm glad and took the chance to apply to the job instead of thinking I was unqualified for it and just not applying.
