I liked that I was able to learn a lot about the industry that I most likely want to enter into after college. I learned so much over the summer in my internship about the different ways you can apply civil engineering knowledge to real life situations when working in construction. I was able to fulfill many important tasks as well while I worked over the summer, so instead of just observing the project continue on, I was able to actively contribute.
What I wish was different
I wish that I could have experienced what it feels like to work a full day as a project manager or field engineer, but since the internship only allowed for 40 hours of work a week to be done, I had shorter days than the people I worked under.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share is to not be afraid to ask your mentors questions when you are an intern. Everyone you work under wants to share with you all the knowledge they have, so if you ask questions, you will obtain more knowledge than you could just by learning in school. They all have real life experience with working in the field you might want to work in one day, so they can give you a more realistic picture on what you will need to do when you graduate college.
