Maine Medical Center

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2020 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I liked the independence of working on my project and I loved my mentors.

What I wish was different

Obviously this is a different time, but I wish I had been able to see my coworkers in person.

Advice

Always take opportunities even if they aren't what you expected.

Pharmacy Technician

July 2018 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I really enjoyed interacting with patients and being trusted with more and more tasks as I gained more experience working. It feels nice to be able to help patients if they have an issue with their medications or insurance and sometimes even make them smile or laugh because people in the hospital are often times stressed out.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a course about insurance where I could learn the basics about the different types of insurances/plans because there are many issues you run into when processing one's insurance and I felt myself needing to ask for help a lot.

Advice

This is a great experience and I encourage anyone interested in the field of pharmacy, and even health care in general to take a job like this if given the opportunity. You learn a lot about the field of pharmacy, and receive a lot of great advice from the fellow pharmacists and technicians that you work with.

Clinical Psychologist Intern

July - September 2019 • Portland, ME

What I liked

My boss! She is an absolute brilliant child psychiatrist and was able to give me a lot of career violence. Additionally, I got to have a 50/50 experience in both clinical work in the children's hospital and research and data collection in an office setting--bouncing between the two daily was very cool.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been there longer! It was truly the best internship experience I've ever had.

Advice

Never go into any patient meeting--even a med consult--with a preconceived notion of what will likely be observed. Flexibility is so crucial in this field and any preconceived notions can impact you quality of care.

Patient Services Support Technician

May 2017 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I loved being in every area of the hospital each day and working directly with patients!

What I wish was different

I wish I could have furthered my education of hospital protocols and even been able to move into a different position, but there are few healthcare jobs available for only the summer.

Advice

Excellent place to start if you're interested in any career based in a medical setting!

Neuroscience Institute Summer Intern

June - August 2016 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I was able to work on many different projects the Neuroscience Institute had to get done including stroke data organization , a lateral mass screw post-surgery followup study , and an OR efficiency study in the neurosurgery unit.

What I wish was different

I believe I got the most out of this experience that I could and was working with some amazing people on a ton of different projects. This gave me an overall sense of what it would be like to work in research and medicine within the hospital setting which is what I set out to do with the internship.

Advice

Don't back down from anything they throw at you. Whether you are a bit squeemish, or dislike searching through confusing databases, you'll learn a lot from every project they assign you and will be much better off for it. Also talk to people while you are there. Every single random conversation I had led to a great story, a fun friend, or a new connection!

Financial Systems Support

May - August 2018 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I loved all the people I worked with! They all showed me hands on how to do the work they were completing and was able to complete most of my work on my own.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little more interaction with people outside of my office even though I attending some high profile meetings.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask re-assuring questions with what ever tasks they give you, they know interns don't know much about the business you're working for and they are more than happy to help guide you through your work. You will come out of the job knowing a lot more than you thought you would if you ask a lot of good curious questions
