Main Line Health

Nurse Extern

May 2020 • Media, PA

What I liked

The organizers and nurse educators are very kind and willing to help you learn all that you can.

What I wish was different

I wish that over the summer there had been more opportunity for us to learn how to be nurses. I spent a lot of time doing tech or housekeeping work. Those are important tasks but I really wanted to learn more about caring for patients.

Advice

Go in knowing what the job description is. Take every opportunity you can get and introduce yourself to everyone you meet. Making connections makes the experience so much better.

Nurse Extern

May 2020 • Malvern, PA

What I liked

I loved the environment and the intraprofessional experiences that I was able to be a part of. In the rehab hospital, OT, PT, nurses, doctors and PCTs work closely together with the care for each and every patient.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have had the opportunity to be within the acute care setting, rather than only in the rehab setting.

Advice

Ask all of the questions that you can and look for every opportunity that you can. I asked about shadowing the wound nurse at my hospital, and it was one of the most memorable experiences that I have experienced thus far. You never know what is around the corner after a question!

What I liked

Great atmosphere, great people to work with, good facilities, very flexible for school.

What I wish was different

I wish I started sooner!

Advice

If you are going in to the healthcare world, from nursing to medical school, I highly recommend a job as a patient care tech. The learning first hand is unmatched, plus you gain huge amounts of confidence with patient contact. Working for main line health has many benefits, including tuition assistance. Plus, after graduation, I now have my foot in the door and have created my own network.

Nurse Extern

May 2019 • Bryn Mawr, PA

What I liked

The job taught me a lot and helped me feel prepared for my junior year clinical rotation. I worked 12 hour shifts, which was a strain at times but helped me realize I am capable of working in the hospital setting one day.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked with a nurse one on one more often. I mainly had the same responsibilities as a patient care technician. But, the nurses helped me learn and would always include me when they had an interesting patient diagnosis or there was something unique on the floor.

Advice

It is worth it to apply to an externship after the first clinical experience in college. The experience taught me so much and I recommend it to anyone.

Registered nurse

August 2018 • Wynnewood, PA

What I liked

Main line health offers novice nurses the opportunity to be apart of a nurse residency program for a year to allow for better adjustment to the new role. For the first few weeks as a nurse you have a preceptor, but with the residency program a group of new nurses meet together and be have educational activists as well as time to communicate and network about the difficulties as a novice nurse.
