I enjoyed helping out the Surgical Resident's Coordinator with managing 35 residents. It was a great experience to provide a helping hand to the surgical residents. I liked working in excel to create the residents' schedules. Overall, my bosses were very encouraging and guided me throughout the internship.
What I wish was different
I wished my experience was more hands-on and observing the surgical floors. I wished to have seen what needs to be improved.
Advice
One piece of advice I would like to share is to do unexpected work and help that will benefit your bosses and relieve their stress.

Medical intern
June - July 2022 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I enjoyed the exposure to the medical field by shadowing doctors and their daily lives in their professions. In addition, I was able to attend workshops and research conferences that gave me a better idea of where my interests lie.
What I wish was different
I wish the position was paid since it was everyday from 9-3pm. In addition, we didn’t have free metro cards to travel to the hospital.
Advice
I would advise future interns to carry a notebook around because there’s a lot of information that you encounter everyday. Also, you will meet a lot of different professionals who have their own stories to share; you can gain a better understanding of your journey from theirs.

Volunteer Companion

What I liked
I was able to observe nurses and watch patients, serving as a companion, to gain more insight and experience in the nursing profession. Everyone I met and worked with was extremely caring and clarified any questions I had.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to do a little bit more hands-on work with the nurses in caring for the patients.
Advice
The experience is what you make of it if you have questions be sure to ask, put yourself out there and introduce yourself to the hospital staff because more than likely they would love to teach you a thing or two.

Student Extern
June - August 2018 • New York City, NY
What I liked
One thing I really liked at Maimonides was how the nurses on the floor took time out of their busy schedule to teach me the necessary skills to becoming an RN.
What I wish was different
One thing i wish that could have been different would be that the externship would have lasted longer.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to never hesitate to ask questions. My nurse preceptor told me your always learning and to never feel that your question is not worth asking.

Intern
July - August 2018 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I learned a lot during my two months working in the surgical ICU. I assisted nurses in their clinical duties for patients post-surgery, shadowed trauma surgeons and intensivists during rounds, observed one-on-one observation patients and ensures specific diet orders, and was trained in the simultaneous interpretation technique for Cantonese.
What I wish was different
I wish that I was given more duties during my time there. Although I learned a lot while shadowing, I feel like the staff at Maimonides could have made our experience more hands on, maybe by providing events like CPR training.
Advice
Definitely take advantages of programs like this to spend your precious summers wisely, especially as a premed student.
